To Rochester
***THOUGHTS FROM THE AIR*** Somewhere over Nebraska it is eighty-three degrees below zero on the flight I am not supposed to be on. See, six months ago there was a flight to Cleveland, but Continental thought this was a bad idea meanwhile, so now I am somewhere over Nebraska with a layover on my knee, where it is eighty-three degrees below zero and I am awaiting Newark, where the only redeeming...

From Los Angeles. Last Week.
The Rolls-Royce Corniche has a blown out right front headlight as I cough and focus intently on it in the Venice Boulevard darkness, somewhere between the surplus warehouse with the violent orange banner screaming “EARTHQUAKE SURVIVAL KIT HERE!” and the casket showroom. There is much to mull over, in four days time I will be back to real life. Those stubborn Thirteen Cockroach Cars took two years...

From Los Angeles. Next Week.
David Lynch is on the cover of LA Weekly, and Hollywood is about as glitzy as Times Square: all tourists and veneer, more vacant buildings than you would think, and a palpable current of grime running just below the surface. Amoeba Records is a good place to make poor financial decisions, so I did. In fact, we all spent too much money, so we went to the desert. We lost KDAY when we started to...

From Los Angeles. First Week.
Perhaps I am wired for west coast time. I go to sleep early (12am) and rise early (9am). This is no different than my sleep intervals back East, but here they are within the range of social acceptability, almost normal. The long drive to San Pedro to pay respect to D. Boon (which we did) took us through the terrifying port of Los Angeles, with enough dizzying mechanization to make anyone want to...
andthatsmile asked: how's the west coast treating you?

The East Coast, from the West Coast
These are the first photos I ever processed and printed myself, mostly in New York, 2006-7. These are some of them. Some of them.

To Los Angeles
The childlike wonder of de-icing delay melted my puddle-jumper on pre-jaunt to Cleveland and heightened my excitement. As the precocious ERJ-145 belatedly lifted off Rochester soil, I said to myself “wow, what a ride,” then thought about how nice these would be for last words. Then I thought about what a shame it was no one else heard me say them.
In Cleveland I was seated, waiting...
